How to Get Rid of the Smell of Mothballs

The odour of mothballs can be very strong. If the odour is on washable surfaces or fabrics, this article might just provide you with an answer for lessening, or even getting rid of, the smell.


Equal parts of:

  • White vinegar
  • Lemon juice, freshly squeezed

    Mix the white vinegar and lemon juice together in a bowl.

    Dip a soft cloth or a soft cleaning brush into the mixture.

    Scrub the area that smells of mothballs.

    Repeat until you notice a lessening in the odour. You might need to wait until the initial scrubbing dries up and you have aired the room before your nose will be able to pick up whether it needs more scrubbing or not.


  • Avoid using mothballs in future. Prefer cedar chips or other natural moth repellents which are not harmful to health and do not leave a foul odour.
