How to Get Motivated to Study for a Test in High School

Here are four easy steps that all students can take to achieve better grades in exams. Keep reading if you want to know how to study for an exam and get yourself motivated for success in school.

Write down the specific grade you are committed to achieving in each specific course you're taking.
  2. Image titled Be Prepared for a Big Test Step 5
Commit to your goals. Write, next to each grade, why you absolutely MUST achieve that specific grade. Consider this: a) What will it ultimately cost you if you don’t achieve the grades you want? What do you ultimately stand to lose and miss out on the results you're capable of? b) What will you ultimately gain when you achieve the grades you want? How will the knowledge and qualifications help you create a wonderful life? Consider the effects of your results on your self-confidence, relationships, career, time, health, wealth, hobbies, and personal happiness… literally every area of your life.
  3. Image titled Feel Confident Before an Exam Step 4
Develop a study timetable. Successful students create a plan for how to study for a test before they start any work. So use a calendar to plot which subjects you need to revise and when, in order to achieve the results you outlined in Step One above.

Take action. Make it your top priority to stick to your study timetable and get your work done using all the revision techniques and study tips you know. Then, reward yourself with something pleasurable immediately after every revision session you complete because this will help your brain associate enjoyment with studying.

  • There’s something that’s much more important than any studying tips or revision techniques, and that is having a bigger ‘purpose’ that inspires you. In other words, people need to have a huge emotionally charged reason why they absolutely must achieve something before they will actually do all the work that’s necessary to achieve their desires.
  • Only when you've tapped into your deepest motivation can you then begin to answer the question, “How do I study for exams?” What you need to do is unleash your inner drive. You need to figure out why you want to do well? What will exam success mean for you? What opportunities will academic achievement lead to in your lifetime? How will good test scores help you create the life you want? You need to open up to your personal reasons why you absolutely must achieve the grades you want.
  • It’s nice to have goals and dreams, but when a specific result becomes an absolute ‘must’, that’s when you become totally committed to gaining the result you want… and that’s when you actually start taking the actions that are necessary for success.
  • All young people have the brain power required to learn and memorize the information required for their exams.
