Set yourself up for success. Set out all your materials in a cozy area with everything you'll need to do your homework. Things you may need include: a calculator, pencils, pens, paper, a compass, a protractor, your textbook, and the assignment.
    • Read over the assignment and make sure you understand how many problems you have to do. Look them all up in the book if necessary, to browse through them and find out where the tough spots will be.

Eliminate all distractions. No Internet, no TV, no phone. Get rid of anything that's going to tempt you to waste time and drag out the homework process longer. The only way to get your homework done quickly is to get down to work.
    • For some people, music can be helpful, especially music without any words. Try Mozart, if it helps to calm you down and focus.

Read through each problem and understand it before starting to work on it. Don't leap into a problem blindly. Read through it and make sure you know what it is you have to do. This is especially important on word problems and story problems. If you blunder into an equation without reading it closely, you're going to end up wasting lots of time and taking more time doing the homework than you would have with the right planning. Slow down and you'll go faster in the end by doing it correctly.

Work on one problem at a time. Don't jump around or you'll start confusing yourself and it'll take forever. Work on one problem and finish it completely and correctly before moving on to the next. Go back through your problems at the end to double-check your work after you're finished.

Use the reward method. Have a healthy snack waiting near by to keep you moving. Every time you answer a question, give yourself a bite of the food.
    • Unwrap a candy and suck on it while you work. Peppermints are often used to stimulate the mind. Mint gum has been shown to help boost brainpower in some cases, keeping your mind active and quick.

Getting Help When You Need It

Go to a math help site online. Many online study guides are available that might be able to explain the skill or problem more easily than your teacher did, or than you parents might, as much as they'd like to try. Don't use these as a crutch, but if it's necessary and will help you finish faster, give it a shot.

Ask a parent or an older sibling to check your work. Having another set of eyes to check over your work after you've already done it can be extremely helpful. Even if you've chosen the right equation and gone about the problem in the correct way, you might have added wrong or missed something tiny that someone else would see instantly. If you've spent a lot of time with the homework, show it to someone else. It's not cheating, it's being smart.

Take a break, if necessary. Even though you want to get done as soon as possible, taking a break can end up saving you time by saving your brain. If you've got a long assignment of complicated problems ahead of you, take a break every half hour if it's going to take a while. Do something else for 5 or 10 minutes and let your brain relax by thinking about something else. You'll be fresh and be able to figure out the problems more quickly after that quick break, and you'll probably finish in no time.

  • Having phone numbers of kids in your math class may help. They could be stuck on the same problem as you.
  • Listen to music while doing your homework.

  • If you do call someone, talk about math, not about the cute boy from school or last night's game.
