How to Get Involved With Second Harvest

Second Harvest Food Bank is a non-profit organization in the United States that gives food to low-income families and others in need. If you would like to give back to your community, try following these steps to get involved with Second Harvest.

    Make a monetary donation. The organization accepts donations online or by mail or fax. Checks and credit card donations are accepted as well as cash and even shares of stock.

    Give food to Second Harvest. The food bank partners with organizations from senior centers to soup kitchens to distribute food to those in need. Whether you are a commercial food manufacturer with leftover product or a home gardener with too much produce to use, Second Harvest can accept your extra food, provided it is still healthy or safe enough to eat.

    Start a donation drive to raise money or food for the organization. Second Harvest Food Bank will provide the supplies you need, such as containers to hold donated food items, and deliver them to you for free. At the end of the fund-raising or food drive, the organization will also pick up the donations and supplies at a time that is convenient for you.

    Volunteer your time to help Second Harvest. Individuals over 14 years old and groups of people can volunteer at the food bank but must sign a volunteer agreement and follow rules and guidelines. Areas people can volunteer in include educating others in their community on nutrition health and hunger and sorting or distributing food. Parental consent needs to be obtained with a permission slip for volunteers who are 14 to 17 years old.

    Become an advocate for hunger relief. You can contact your local elected officials, write letters, or talk to people in your community to urge for help and bring attention to the fight against hunger.


  • Second Harvest has a Virtual Food Drive on their website that lets people make online donations to support organizations or individuals running food or money drives.
  • Second Harvest Food Bank serves Santa Clara and San Mateo counties in the state of California. There is another charitable organization involved in fighting hunger called Feeding America that was formerly called America's Second Harvest. Feeding America supports a network of food banks in the 50 United States, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.


  • You must fill out a new enrollment form each year you plan to have a drive to support Second Harvest.
  • Second Harvest cannot deliver fewer than 3 food collection barrels for drives held between October and January because of high demand for their pickup and delivery services during those months. The food bank offers a Self Service system to allow organizations to pick up their requested barrels themselves.
