How to Get Involved With Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity is an organization that builds homes for those in need and works to combat poverty, homelessness and housing issues throughout the world. The new homeowners put their own sweat equity into the house alongside volunteers. But even if you don't want to pick up a hammer, there are ways to get involved with Habitat for Humanity in your local community or around the world.

    Find your local Habitat for Humanity chapter and contact person by searching Habitat.org. Ask the contact what volunteer opportunities are available right in your hometown.

    Become a Habitat for Humanity advocate to speak up for change regarding public policy on housing. Write a letter to your state and federal representatives, urging them to make affordable housing a top priority.

    • Habitat's International Volunteer program is a long-term (6 to 12 month) building project, while the Global Village program's building projects usually last less than 2 weeks.

    Become a volunteer at Habitat for Humanity headquarters in Americus, Georgia. Volunteer opportunities include maintenance work at Habitat buildings, supporting Habitat's operations and assisting with drafting projects.

    • Collegiate chapters of Habitat for Humanity focus on building projects during school breaks. Youth United is a group for people of all ages who are interested in raising funds for Habitat.

    Volunteer to help out with Habitat's Prison Partnership program, which matches an inmate with an opportunity to help build a home. The goal of the program is to give the inmate valuable skills that he can take with him after his release.
