How to Get in the NBA

The National Basketball Association (NBA) is the world's most popular basketball league, with 30 teams (29 in the United States and one in Canada). Featuring some of the world's tallest and most famous athletes, it takes a lot of work to get into a professional sports league. But that's not impossible - if you're a skilled basketball player, start with step one below to possibly make your dreams come true!

    Practice, practice, practice! If you have a basketball hoop at home, play basketball everyday. One way that you can get better at basketball, is to go to the gym a few times a week do some drills and work on your ball handles. Also, run everyday to be in good shape! Playing with people who are better than you will make you better. Also in a game, do not get easily discouraged. You can always make up for a disappointing game in the next.

    Be sure to practice shooting everywhere on the court meaning your close range, mid range and 3 point range (within reason). Work on developing a nice, clean shot. Also practice shooting as if someone were guarding you and pay attention to the goal.

    Definitely do not forget to stretch! This is one of the key elements in preventing injury, but stretch after you warm up. Also, try get a roller to roll out on before and after practice

    If there are any teams in your area, sign up! Practicing in the gym will help a lot, but being on a team is even better. If you are unable to join an organized team, practice basketball every day on your own for at least an hour or more. Remember to put 110% of your effort on the game.

    You need to make your high school team, so that you can get onto a college team. It is required to go to college to get into the NBA unless you're from outside the United States. The NBA drafts players from college.

    Do not forget about physical strength. It is very necessary to build muscles, so you can enhance your field goal ability and stamina.

    Try to maintain good shooting in high school and college - at least 60% average from 2-point field goal, 40% from 3-point line and 75% from free throw line.

    Be a leader and team player, both on and off the court. And don't forget about being a good sport.

    Use every skill you have to your advantage on the court. Make it your own, and nobody else's.


  • Have a back up plan, in case your dreams don't go as planned.
  • Consider going out for a basketball summer camp. You will usually get playing time.
  • Go talk to scouts, ask your coach for any opportunities, and never undermine yourself.
  • Tell the your gym teacher or coach to help you get better at basketball and they will gladly be willing to give you tips. They will also spend extra time in school if they need to so you can get better.
  • Don't only concentrate on one thing in basketball. Being an all-rounder helps when playing basketball.
  • Always try to stand out on the court in the most positive way possible. Have a signature move and master it, and try to make sure as many eyes are on you as possible!
  • Be very sportsmanlike. The NBA will be filled with different people, so you're going to have to be very verbal.


  • Do not get involved with the wrong people or do drugs. Not only would it lead to consequences, drugs can reduce your performance drastically.
  • Do not over-exercise, but do not become lazy. Exercise for about 60 minutes, and try to make a good habit of getting up early.
  • Be realistic about the position you want to play. Compare your height, and build to the average NBA player in that position.
