How to Get a Specialty License Plate in South Dakota

If you are a firefighter, a member of a club or organization, a disabled veteran or you drive a historic vehicle in South Dakota, you can apply for a specialty license plate depicting your membership, status or occupation. Steps

    Access the South Dakota state government website at www.sd.gov.

    Click on "State Agencies" at the top of the page, and select "Transportation" under the "State Agencies" heading to go to the South Dakota Department of Transportation webpage.

    Click on "Vehicles," then on the "Click here for Motor Vehicles" link to go to the Motor Vehicles Division page.

    Choose "License Plates" from the left hand column, then "Specialty License Plates" near the bottom of the page.

    Access the PDF file of the South Dakota Special License Plate Application by clicking on the "form" link at the top of the page.

    Fill out the application online, or print a blank form and write in the required information.

    Check the box beside "New" at the top of the form to indicate the application type.

    Print or type your name, address and county of residence.

    Enter your vehicle information. This includes make, year, model, Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and title number.

    Mark with an "X" the appropriate box beside the specialty plate design you wish to order.
    • Note that if you are ordering Commercial or Amateur Radio specialty license plates, you must include the date you were issued your FCC license and station call letters.
    • Indicate which tribe you are affiliated with if ordering Indian Tribal specialty license plates.
    • Add your V.A. Claim Number to the disclosure allowing the Veteran's Administration to confirm eligibility to the South Dakota Department of Revenue and Regulation if you are ordering military veteran's specialty license plates.

    Sign and date the application.

    Send the completed application and payment of required fees to the South Dakota Department of Revenue and Regulation, Division of Motor Vehicles, 445 East Capitol Avenue, Pierre, SD 57501-3185.

Tips

  • Upon approval, specialty license plates can be transferred to another similar vehicle owned by the same applicant.
  • A $5 mailing fee applies to each set of specialty license plates ordered in South Dakota.
  • Note that a Gold Star (Family) specialty license plate must have a copy of verification or a death notice attached to the application.
  • Historic Vehicle and Historic Motorcycle specialty license plates in South Dakota carry only a one-time fee of $10. To be eligible for historic vehicle status, vehicles must be at least 30 years old and not in use.
  • South Dakota National Guard members must surrender National Guard specialty license plates when no longer active.
