How to Get a Personalized License Plate in Louisiana

The application process to get a personalized license plate in Louisiana is easy. The most difficult part may be coming up with a personalized statement that fits on the plate and also fits the rules.

Steps

    Review Louisiana regulations regarding personalized license plates.
    • Your personalized message combination may include up to 7 characters, including letters, numbers and spaces. The plate must include at least 2 letters. Spaces, periods and hyphens count as one character each.

    Any personalized message that substitutes a zero for the letter 0 and the number 1 for the letter I will not be accepted.

    You cannot use ham radio signals, special symbols such as an ampersand or percentage sign, patented logos, three letters followed by three numbers, or anything deemed to be offensive. Your personal message must not already be an active plate.

    Submit your choice for a personalized message through a Louisiana personal plate inquiry at the Louisiana Department of Public Safety website.

    Fill out the form online, formally requesting the plate once your plate choice has been accepted.
    • You'll need your vehicle identification number as well as other information about your vehicle, including its make and model, body style and year. You'll also need your driver's license number and your current license plate number.
    • Once you make your personalized message request, it will be held for 2 weeks. This gives the Office of Motor Vehicles time to process your application, and for you to pay.

    Look for an email from the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles, requesting payment. Wait 7 days. If at that time you haven't received an e-mail with a price, call 225-925-6371.

    Mail your payment to the OMV so the department can process your order. Personal or business checks are accepted but your driver's license number must be included. Cashier's checks and money orders are also accepted.
    • As of 2011, a personalized license plate costs $25 per year extra on top of the registration costs. An extra $11.50 will be added to cover administrative and handling fees.

    Allow 10 to 12 weeks for personalized license plate delivery.
    • If you have a regular plate currently, the new personalized plate will be mailed directly to you.
    • If you have a personalized plate on your vehicle currently, you must turn in the old plate to pick up the new plate. You will be notified as to where you can make the exchange.

    Destroy your old plate, as it is no longer valid.

Warnings

  • You must abide by certain regulations regarding the transfer of your personalized plates. If you sell your vehicle, you must notify the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and fill out the appropriate paperwork indicating whether you want the plate to be transferred to the new owner, kept with you and put on a different vehicle, or simply turned in.
  • As per Louisiana law, your vehicle must be registered prior to your application for personalized plates.
