How to Fix a Loose Power Cord

Do your power cords hang loosely from their sockets, creating a potential fire hazard? If so, you'll be pleased to know that fixing it takes less time than it took you to read this.

Steps

    Ensure the appliance in question is turned off.

    Unplug the appliance in question.

    Take the plug at the end of the cord between your thumb and forefinger.

    Squeeze the two prongs together slightly.

    Reinsert the cord.

Tips

  • Consider some cable management if you have a lot of loose cords. Bread ties work great for this, especially the heavier-duty ones that come with electronics. Twist ties are the best, but they're permanent (until you cut 'em off). Dollar stores sell them cheap.

Warnings

  • The fixed plug probably won't go in the socket very easily. You don't want to force it, but rather put it in at an angle, one side first. Once you've 'hooked' the bent plug against the middle of the socket, kind of rock the plug in. It should go right in and 'hug' the middle, creating the more secure connection.
