How to Find the Original Source of a Video on wikiHow
So... there you are on Recent Changes patrol... and a video pops up... How do you find the source of that video to be able to determine if it is "open source" or legal for us to import and display here? Well, here's a way to do it.
Steps
- 1Click on the video diff link in RC patrol.
- For example: (diff)
- 2Find the wiki-markup that adds the video in the edit. This should look something like
{{Video:Grill Salmon}} in the example above. In other situations, "Grill Salmon" will be replaced with the actual name of the video. - 3Copy the name of the video (Video:Grill Salmon in the example), and prefix it with http://www.wikihow.com/ to form something like this:
http://www.wikihow.com/Video:Grill-Salmon - 4Put the link you just formed to your browser's address bar and click the "Go" button or press the Enter key. This will take you to the video itself.
- 5Click the "Edit" button and you should see something like
{{Curatevideo|5min|5269|How to cook Salmon|How ....}} - 6Read the source (the first section of the template, 5min in this example) and determine if it is legal.
Tips
- You can find out about sources that are importable to wikiHow in the Importable Content Page.
Warnings
- Videos from other sources must be shared by explicit permission.
