Fasting is an important part of the religious experience for Christians. As Christians we should fast at least once in our lives. In Matthew 6:16 Christ said "when you fast" not "if you fast". That shows that Christ wants us to fast. This article will help you decide what kind of fast you want to do, when to do it, and how to do it.

Many Christians fast during the time period known as Lent. This is a good time period to fast in because it is the period of days leading up to Easter. It can really help you reflect on your spiritual life in Christ. But you can fast on any day you want to. (Catholics the only days the Church does not allow fasting is on solemnities. Keep that in mind.)

The Devil will try to tempt you away from your fast. NEVER GIVE IN! The Devil tempted Jesus when he was fasting for 40 days yet he didn't give in. It is said that Saint Anthony was walking in the desert, and the Devil tried to tempt him by putting gold coins in his sight to make him turn from his fasting and life of asceticism; he didn't give in.

If you feel like the temptations are too strong, leave the area that the temptations are in. This always helps.

Remember that you are doing this for Christ. Jesus did say that everything you do is for him. Don't fail him. On the last days he will present this to you.

Method 5
Last but not least do not be a hypocrite.

Do not build up pride in yourself just because you're fasting. The religious leaders in Jesus's day did that all the time. They already got their reward , they will not get it again in the next life.

Don't boast about fasting. Try to do all that you can do to look healthy. If you boast and build up pride about your fasting you are no better then the religious leaders in Jesus's day.

Tips

  • As I said prepare for your fast. Make sure you're healthy enough before you start it.
  • If you feel like you can't go on anymore; and if you are seriously injuring yourself by doing this then STOP!
  • Pray, pray, pray, and did I mention pray? Spend time with God. Get your mind off of whatever you're fasting for. This will help reduce your temptations.

Warnings

  • You aren't going to feel the greatest physically in your fast... or maybe mentally depending on what you're fasting for.
  • I know I've said this a lot but do not be prideful and brag!
