How to Exude Confidence

We’re not all lucky enough to be brimming with confidence at every moment, but there are ways to appear more confident. Follow these steps and maybe you’ll become more confident than you ever thought possible.

Part 1
Body Language

    Practice good Posture. This may take some adjusting if you typically slouch or sit in a chair all day. But good posture in one of the biggest keys to looking more confident.
    • Stand as straight and tall as you can.
    • Try to push your shoulder blades slightly back and down.

    Keep your chin up. You don't have to stare at the ceiling, but keeping your head up adds to the appearance that you're alert and proud.

    Free your hands. Most people don't know what to do with their hands when nervous and this can be a dead giveaway that you're not feeling confident.
    • Take your hands out of your pockets. Keeping your hands in your pockets is not only a sign that you're unsure of yourself, but it also encourages slouching.
    • Try not to cross your arms across your chest. This is a classic sign of closed-off body language.
    • Make natural hand gestures when speaking. It's okay to move your hands around a little, but don't overdo it.
    • Stop fidgeting. Constantly adjusting your hands or touching your hair and face will certainly make you look less confident.

    Relax. Now that you're standing tall with your shoulders back, try not to look too stiff. Loosen up a little and if you feel yourself getting tense, take some deep breaths.

Part 2
About Face

    Make eye contact. Eyes are more than just a window to the soul, they're a a reflection of your confidence level. You can say a lot about yourself with your eyes.
    • Maintain direct eye contact when speaking to someone. Try not to be the person who always looks away first.
    • Keep your eyes level and look forward. When you're not speaking to someone or are walking around, looking down at the ground is a sign that you don't want to interact with anyone.

    Smile. This will show that you're not worried and, in fact, are having a good time. People like to interact with happy people.
    • Keep the smile genuine.
    • Don't smile at inopportune moments, this could make you look creepy.

Part 3

    Keep your mind off of stressful situations. If you have an event or a date, it's easy to overthink it while you're waiting. This will add to your stress. Focus on your normal preparations, and then try to occupy your mind with something else.

    Approach people. Don't wait too long to approach people at an event. If you see someone you'd like to meet or talk to, walk up to them right away. The longer you wait, the more reasons you'll give yourself not to go.

    Engage people in conversation. A confident person usually has something to say. Don't be afraid to introduce yourself to people.
    • Speak clearly and audibly.
    • Ask questions. When having a conversation with someone you just met, asking questions is a sign that your interested in them and would like to keep the conversation going. It also allows you to steer the conversation.
    • Keep it simple. Try not to ramble on and on. Talking too much can be a sign of nervousness or that you're trying to dominate the conversation.

    Forgive yourself for small mistakes. Not every encounter is going to be successful, and that's okay. Don't dwell on every little thing that may have gone wrong. This will only make you reluctant or fearful of trying again. Process what happened, learn from it, and move on.
