How to Express Yourself Through Composing Music

Composing music can be very satisfying as a way to express oneself.

    Seek the message. Music that expresses something conveys a message. To express yourself you need to convey a message about yourself. One way to do this is to write program music ( about events in your life, your emotions or abstract thoughts and desires.

    Create an impression. Most importantly, the way you express yourself will elicit an impression and according to this impression you will be able to discriminate whether you feel that you have expressed yourself or not.

    Listen to your own music when composing. Does it reflect you original idea - the program? Refine your music until satisfied.

    Keep learning and practicing. Mastering a technique allows a fluent form of expression, with less and less need of subsequent refinement as one grows into the task.


  • Try writing a whole piece in one go. Find the program that is your expression and aim for a flow experience.
  • Try the above idea but only for the A or B section of a song. Then, have a break and return to writing the other part. Try to keep elements of one part to maintain continuity across the song, however, hopefully you will notice a contrast between A and B because of writing at different times or in different moods.
  • The most modest experiences can be characterized in grotesque or beautifying ways. Select an everyday program and add some fantasy to it.


  • Finding a message can be difficult. Don't let that stress you. Simply trying to write by observing your bodily state (e.g. resting, aroused) or best (e.g. birthdays) and worst (e.g. unrequited love) thoughts during the day/week/month (a past event) or hopes for the future (e.g. dreams, striving for a specific goal) when composing can be an inspiration.
