How to Enjoy Turkish Coffee

Turkish coffee "... should be as black as hell, as strong as death, and as sweet as love". The steps below will show you how it's made. Enjoy!

Ingredients

  • coffee beans
  • water
  • sugar (optional)
  • cardamom (optional)
  • Turkish delight

Steps

    Grind the beans to a powder-like consistency. You may purchase a bag of ground Turkish coffee or simply do this yourself.

    Pour cold water into the cezve, using a demitasse as measuring cup.

    Add one heaping teaspoon of coffee per cup.

    Add (optionally) one teaspoon of sugar to every two teaspoons of coffee. Stir until the sugar is dissolved. Turkish coffee can also be enjoyed with less sugar or even without it.

    Put the cezve on medium heat. Watch for the froth to build.

    Remove from heat as soon as froth starts to build.

Tips

  • Turkish coffee is traditionally served with Turkish delight.
  • It is considered impolite (at least in the Middle East) to leave your host's home before you've had three cups.
  • The coffee grounds that are left in the cup can be used for fortune-telling.
  • Stop sipping when you taste the grounds coming through.
  • Let the grounds settle for at least a minute before you take the first sip.

Warnings

  • Watch the boiling process carefully. If the coffee boils over it creates a terrible mess!
