How to Edit the Category Tree on wikiHow

Two Methods:Adding a Sub-CategoryRemoval of a Sub-Category

The Category Tree is located at Category Tree. It is a protected document that can only be edited by administrators in order to maintain the integrity of the category structure as a whole. As well as providing visual order of the entire category structure (akin to a map) and assisting with sound organization of the categories, the Category Tree has technical importance for the categorization performed through the dashboard tools of Categorizing Articles and Category Guardian. To add a new sub-category to the Category Tree, follow these instructions.

Method 1
Adding a Sub-Category

  1. 1
Have permission to edit the Category Tree. At the moment, the permission is restricted to a few members of the administrators. Also note that generally only sub-categories are edited, not top level categories.
  2. 2
Open the Category Tree in your browser. Visit the Category Tree. To open it, click on Edit.
  3. 3
Find the appropriate place where the category should appear in the Tree. All related categories will be grouped together.
    • Note that top level categories are the ones you see on the front page of wikiHow under "Browse Categories". On the Category Tree, these look like this: * - Name of Category. However, unless you have wikiHaus agreement, no top level categories should be added at this point in time.
  4. 4
Type or tap in the new subcategory's name at the appropriate level on the Tree. Add the sub-category entry in the form consistent with the rest of the categories:
    • First level sub-category looks like this: ** - Name of sub-category
    • Second level sub-category looks like this: *** - Name of second level sub-category
    • Continue this pattern as needed. Do not go lower than 4 stars without asking for permission from either Anna or Flickety, as this may be considered as "digging too deeply".
    • All blank lines and all lines that start with an internal link (i.e. [[) will be ignored when the drop-down menu in the side bar is created.

Method 2
Removal of a Sub-Category

  1. 1
Do not remove a sub-category without authority. At the moment, this is restricted to permission from Anna or Flickety. Work is being undertaken on this issue and updates will be made when resolved.
  2. 2
Ensure that all articles have been removed from the sub-category to new areas on the site. Delete the sub-category. This is best done before removal from the Category Tree, to ensure that there are no loose ends.
  3. 3
Open the Category Tree. Click on Edit and remove its entry from the drop-down list article by deleting. Press Publish and it will be removed.

  • You can also edit the category drop down for the "Request a Topic" page in the same way, by editing wikiHow:RequestCategories. Since wikiHow only uses top-level categories for its Requests, however, changes to this file are relatively rare. Speak to Anna before making any such changes.
