How to Dye a Dog's Fur

Dying your dogs fur is a fun project for Halloween or another occasion. However, you have to make sure you do it right!

    Mix some food colouring with water. Make it a little darker then the colour your want your dog's fur to be.

    Put it in a spray bottle or a bath, depending on the size of your dog.

    Spray/bathe your dog thoroughly. Make sure all of the dog's fur is covered.

    Comb through the dog's fur to make sure it doesn't get tangled.

    Bring your dog over to some newspaper, where s/he dries off.

  • Do this outside if at all possible. It is messy.
  • Never use human hair dye, as they contain harmful chemicals.
  • If your dog is small, use the bath.
  • If your dog is large, use the spray bottle.
  • For darker or black colored dogs, this technique may not work.
  • Afterwards take the dog on a short walk to dry it.
  • If your dog is an orange color to begin with you may want to lean more toward red to dye him a true orange. Even then it is still difficult.
  • While still wet from their baths we simply rubbed the food coloring in to their fur with our hands; fun for all!


  • Only use food colouring, as it is edible. If you use a toxic dye, your dog might try to lick it off and the dye could possibly poison him/her.
  • Make sure not to get any food colouring in your dog's eyes.

  • Food colouring.
  • Water.
  • Spray bottle/bath.
