How to Do the Cup Song

The beat is based on "The Cup Game" an old child's game. (It was in Full House and Zoom) Lulu and the Lampshades created it, Pitch Perfect popularized it, and Anna Kendrick popularized it even more. Here are the steps if you want to learn it.

Steps

    Find a hard plastic cup that is fairly heavy (if you have one or you could use a bottle). You can also use a disposable paper or plastic cup, but the weight of a heavier cup keeps it from flying out of your hands when you're performing the song.

    Place the cup upside down on a table or hard surface. It should be directly in front of you.

Method 1
Right-Handed

    Clap twice.

    Hit the top of the cup three times: first with your right hand, then with your left hand, and again with your right hand. You can also hit the table.

    Pick the cup up with your right hand so it's about 2 inches (5 cm) above the table.

    Move the cup approximately 6 inches (15 cm) to your right and set it down. It should make a noise when it hits the table.

    Clap once.

    Turn your right hand upside down and grasp the cup. Your thumb should be facing down, toward the table.

    Lift the cup and tap the opening to your left palm.

    Place the cup back down on the table, right side up. Don't let go of the cup.

    Hold the bottom of the cup with your left hand.

    Slap your right hand down on the table in front of you.

    Cross your left arm over your right, and place the cup upside down on the table. It should make a noise.

Left-Handed

Tips

  • Hum the beat of the song out loud or in your head. It may help your rhythm.
  • Performing this on a hard surface area can often produce a better result,
  • Once you are confident of the steps, continue to practice and you will be an expert!
  • On each round of the song go a little faster. It can be a challenge but just keep trying.
  • If you practice a lot, you will get awesome at it.
  • If you want a challenge, get some friends together, for a competition. The rule is: everyone had to make 3 changes to the song. Have a few more friends judge your performances. Good luck!
  • Once you get comfortable with the movements, you can try singing along. "You're Gonna Miss Me" is one of the most popular songs, but anything in 4/4 time will generally work.. Search for the cup song on Youtube, so you can understand the instructions a little better. Or, try it with "Cups (Pitch Perfect's When I'm Gone) by Anna Kendrick.
  • Practice until the song is stuck so you can pick up a beat anywhere.
  • If you're a visual learner, write the following pattern down to follow when you're practicing the pattern: Clap clap/tap tap tap/clap up down/clap scoop hand table switch hit down.
  • Taller cups are easier to move, so keep that in mind when finding a cup.
  • If you don't have a cup at school you can practice with a rhythm in your hands or on your friend's back. If you're in class and have got free time, do it with a glue stick or an eraser.

Warnings

  • Do not use a metal cup because when you hit it it will be painful
  • Do not slam the cup too hard if you are using a foam cup. The cup will likely break.
