How to Do Scallop Braids on a Horse

Scallop braids are an uncommon way of braiding your horse's mane.

  1. 1
Start by brushing out your horse's mane.
  2. 2
Once your horse's mane is brushed, separate a small piece of mane by the poll and start braiding a straight braid. After you have started the braid, get a long piece of yarn, and finding the middle of the yarn, add the yarn into the braid. Once you finish the braid, you should have 2 ends of yarn hanging down.
  3. 3
Either end the braid with a braiding band or tie with the yarn.
  4. 4
Continue steps 2 and 3 all the way down the mane, making sure to keep the braids all the same size.
  5. 5
Once the whole mane has been braided, take the first braid and wrap the yarn ends around the next braid, and tie it. Depending on how long your horse's mane is, you might want to tie onto further down braids.
  6. 6
Continue tying the braids like the first one, tying to braids further down the mane and keeping the same distance between each braid.
  7. 7
    You are done!

  • You can either use yarn to match your horse's mane (like for a show) or you can use colorful, contrasting yarn (like for a parade).
  • Your horse's mane can be almost any length for this braid, it will just affect how many braids are in between.

  • Make sure not to leave any braids in your horse for extended periods of time, as your horse could rub out its mane.

Things You'll Need
