How to Do Impact Gardening

Impact Gardening is a way of getting a lot out of a small space. It keeps weed levels low, and makes gardening fast and easy. It is also rather attractive, if done neatly.

    Mark out a space for the garden. It is best to have the long side aligned with the sun, from east to west. This helps keep the plants from burning in the summer heat, and ruining your crops.

    Chart out what you want the garden to look like. It should be attractive, but still be functional.

    Make long thin beds, say 30 feet (9.1 m). long by 4 feet (1.2 m). wide. This makes it easy to weed and plant. Build it out of long 2x8's. Build a rectangular box the length of the boards, and 4 feet (1.2 m). wide. If you make several, you can lay them end to end, parallel to the sun.

    Water them. Buy soaker hoses, and lay them up and down the rows, about one foot from the edges of the bed.


  • Lay the beds parallel to the sun.
  • Put plastic in the paths, and cover with bark or rock.


  • Do not step on the beds when working.
