How to Do Chakra Yoga

The chakras, or the seven energy centers along the spine, are an essential part of everyday life for a yogi or yogini. Awakening these chakras takes time and practice, but by doing a short chakra yoga routine everyday, you can start to tap into these powerful energy sources and enrich your life.

Set up your space as you would for a yoga routine. Wear loose, comfortable clothing, dim the lights, play soft music if you like to and stand at the top of your mat to begin.

Crown Chakra (Sahasrara): Step or jump your feet back into Downward Facing Dog Pose (Adho Mukha Svanasana). Hold this pose for ten breaths (one breath is a full inhalation and a full exhalation) and feel the blood rushing to your head and awakening your crown chakra.

  • Keep your breathing even while practicing Chakra Yoga, so that one set of ten breaths is not faster than another set of ten.
  • Make sure the room you practice yoga in is not too hot or too cold.
  • Keep a bottle of water beside you while you practice and have a drink before you begin.
  • Make sure you won't be disturbed while doing Chakra Yoga. Let family/friends/housemates know that you will be busy for a while and that you'll come out when you've finished.

  • Consult a yoga teacher before attempting any new poses.
  • DO NOT attempt any yoga poses if you have a medical condition without first consulting a qualified yoga teacher and/or your health professional.
  • This sequence is not recommended for beginner yogis and yoginis unless under the supervision of an experienced and qualified yoga teacher.
  • If you feel any pain while doing these poses, stop and consult a health professional.
