How to Design Floating Wall Vases

If you’ve been eying that floating wall vase or vases at the local boutique or hip retailer but are on the fence because of price (or you aren’t entirely sure you love the vase design), make one instead.

Method 1
Preparation

  1. Image titled Design Floating Wall Vases Step 5
    1
Identify a workspace that will allow you to both drill through the vase and paint the nails. You may need to lay down newsprint to protect surfaces.
  2. Image titled Design Floating Wall Vases Step 6
    2
Measure the vase to identify a logical place for the hole. The hole needs to be high up enough so you can fill the vase with water, but still ensure the stability of the vase.
    • Measure both the vase’s height and width. From those measurements, identify a central spot for the hole and mark it with your permanent marker.

Method 2
Drilling the Vase

  1. Image titled Design Floating Wall Vases Step 7
    1
Insert the diamond drill bit into the drill. Begin to slowly drill the hole. Drill slowly to avoid cracking the glass.
  2. Image titled Design Floating Wall Vases Step 8
    2
Spray a small amount of water into the drilled area. Brush the dampened drilled glass dust away with a paper towel.

    3
Continue drilling until you have completed the hole. Spray the area again with water and wipe away dampened glass dust with a paper towel.

Method 3
Sanding the Vase

    1
Sand lightly around the drilled area with the sandpaper. Run the sandpaper around any rough edges and work slowly so you don’t cut or scratch the glass.

Method 4
Hanging the Vase

  1. 1
Paint the nails you plan to use to hang the vase. In order to achieve that “floating” look, you can cover the nails with the same color as your walls for a more blended effect.
    • Allow nails to fully dry before using them.
  2. Image titled Design Floating Wall Vases Step 12
    2
Identify an area on the wall where you plan to hang the vase. If you are hanging more than one vase, use your tape measure and possibly a level to ensure a symmetrical line.
  3. Image titled Design Floating Wall Vases Step 13
    3
Mark the area where you will hammer the nail into the wall. Use a pencil to mark the area.
  4. 4
Tap the nail into the wall, on a slight upward angle slant. The vase should lay back toward the wall and not tip forward.
    • Another option is to drill a hole.

    • Insert anchors in the hole you made.

    • Insert a screw, and leave a few turns for you to hang the vase.

Slide the vase onto the nail, making sure the nail fits snugly in the drilled hole. If adding more than one vase, repeat the process to hang them all in position.

Method 5
Adding the Display Items

  1. Image titled Design Floating Wall Vases Step 16
    1
Remove the vase from the wall. Fill it with water far enough so it provides water for the plant or flower but not so high that it spills out through the hole. Repeat with remaining vases if you're using more than one.
  2. Image titled Design Floating Wall Vases Step 17
    2
Add a flower or more. Hang the vase back on the wall. Adjust the flower positioning once the vase is hanging on the wall, for design and aesthetics purposes.

    Finished.

Tips

  • Spritz the glass every few seconds while you are drilling and wipe away small shards of glass.
  • Consider adding a small bumper to the back of the vase mouth or base to avoid having the vase scratch the walls.

Warnings

  • Work with great care when drilling glass. Wear complete safety gear, including decent eye protection. If you're not sure what you're doing, have an experienced handy person show you what to do first.
