Think about color. Color will dictate the feel of the entire room. Think about what mood you want to set in your space and choose your colors accordingly.
    • Warm and Inviting: Try deep reds, comforting earth tones such as rich browns and creams, and light woods to bring out the intensity of the deep dramatic walls.

    • Cool and Calming: Think about refreshing greens such as mint or pistachio, along with crisp shades of white.

Choose the appropriate furniture. Each of us has a unique and individual eye for decor. Select the things that most accomplish your goal.
    • If you are creating this space for relaxation for example, include things like candles, incense, potpourri, oil plug-ins and even a mini Zen garden or sand pendulum.

    • If you want to create a reading area, get yourself a bookcase and fill the shelves with your favorite books, magazines, or journals. Make sure your room has the appropriate lighting and a comfy seating area.

    • If you are creating your room for exercise or yoga, paint the walls for inspiration; practice your yoga by candlelight and make sure your music collection has at least one really amazing New Age CD. Buy a Nature Sounds collection to inspire an even more tranquil or invigorating mood.

Add individual flair by inviting special interest items into your space; for example, a collection of paintings or antique finds, or even themes such as vintage memorabilia including prints and music. Bring in what you love to make your space your own.

Get fresh air, whether it's a sunny day or it's raining, by opening windows or going outside.
    • On rainy days when you can’t get outside, open your window and breathe in the earthy scents for a simple five minutes, and get in touch with the earth. Close your eyes and listen to the raindrops. It will lull you to peace. If there is thunder and lightning, look out the window and enjoy the light show Mother Nature is performing for you with drama.

    • On sunny days when you want to get out, go to your porch, backyard, or nearby park, find a spot, sit down and purposely feel the warmth of the sun or listen to the birds sing. Go barefoot in the yard. If you have a chance, stop by the beach for a quick walk in the sand, it will feel great (and works as a great natural foot scrub!).

Laugh! It has enormous benefits. In addition to just plain feeling good, it helps to reduce stress and tension, strengthens your immune system, enhances your cardiovascular system, and tightens your abdominal muscles. Try a laughter class - or just practice laughing at home. You could do this while you’re showering, washing dishes, or driving your kids to school. Sure, your family might think you’re crazy at first, but soon enough they’ll be laughing right along with you!

For a space that you can take with you anywhere, put a few things in a shoebox--CDs, candles, books, MP3 player, writing journal, some meaningful photographs--and keep them handy so you can create your own “private space” where ever you are. Not everyone has a separate room – or even one corner of one. Take some time for yourself and set up at the kitchen table, in your bedroom, or even in your car.

Tips

  • Dig out your old photo albums and do some reminiscing, reorganize if needed. You know you’ve been meaning to do it forever. No time like the present!
