How to Decorate a Flower Girl's Basket

Three Methods:Selecting ItemsDecorating the BasketAttaching the Methods

The flower girl's basket is a special part of a wedding: Not only should it fit the theme, but it should make the flower girl feel special, sweet and dainty. The basket carries flowers and flower petals which the flower girl uses to adorn the bride's path and to beautify the ceremony.

Method 1
Selecting Items

Choose a suitable basket. Look in any craft store for suitable baskets. The basket should be:
    • Dainty/small - it should be large enough to contain the desired amount of flower petals but small enough for a child to carry in one hand.
    • Color that fits the wedding theme; if not, make sure that it is a neutral color or white/natural-colored.
    • Small carry handle that is suitable for the girl to hold, and sturdy.

Choose ribbon. Use satin or silk ribbon to tie onto the basket. Use a combination of wide and narrow ribbons that coordinate with the predominant wedding colors. About 4 to 5 yards (3.7 to 4.6 m) of narrow ribbon and 2 to 3 yards (1.8 to 2.7 m) of wide ribbon will be enough for one small basket.

Choose flowers. Choose silk or fresh flowers to decorate the basket.
    • One of the benefits of decorating with artificial flowers is that the basket will remain as beautiful as it was on the day of the wedding. This makes a wonderful keepsake for the flower girl.
    • Order any fresh flowers ahead of time to insure the availability of the flowers you desire. If you are using roses to decorate the basket, they can be dyed professionally to match the colors used in the wedding.

Method 2
Decorating the Basket

Prepare to decorate the basket. There are several options:
    • Add ribbon to the basket. Silk, satin, or velvet ribbon is ideal. Thread the ribbon around the handle and create a rosette or bow for each side of the basket where the handle meets the basket bowl.
    • Add ribbon roses around the edge of the basket. These can be purchased ready-made. Glue them at even intervals around the basket top. You can even add some to the handle if wished, but leave room for holding the handle.
    • Consider adding greenery and artificial flowers to finish off the look of the basket. These additions are really up to your needs and imagination. Use hot glue or floral wire to keep everything in place.

Add a floral arrangement to the basket if wished. This should be small flowers, either smaller versions of what the bride is carrying, or smaller flowers in the same color theme. Some flowers can be dyed if needed.

Add fresh or dried petals to the basket if the basket is being used as a petal basket rather than a floral arrangement. Tell the flower girl when to strew the petals before the wedding commences.

Method 3
Attaching the Methods

Attach the ribbon. Tie lengths of narrow ribbon at each base (or just one) of the basket handle, or use a hot glue gun to attach them if you prefer. The ribbons should trail approximately 6 to 10 inches (15.2 to 25.4 cm) below the bottom of basket.
  2. Image titled Flower Girl Basket Attach Step 8
Tie ribbon bows. Use the wide ribbon to make a bow at each base of the basket handle. These bows will cover any knotted portions of the narrow ribbon streamers.
  3. Image titled Flower Girl Basket Attach Step 9
Attach the flowers. Either cluster the flowers on each side of the basket or attach flowers all along the basket's rim or edge.
    • Attach artificial flowers and greenery by weaving their stems through the open spaces in the basket. The ease with which this is accomplished depends on the structure of the basket. Alternatively, use a hot glue gun to attach artificial flowers.
    • Attach fresh flowers and greenery to the basket with floral wire. Position the flowers on the exterior of the basket. Secure a flower by passing both ends of a length of floral wire over the stem and through to the interior of the basket. Twist the wire ends to secure and then tuck them back into the basket so that they are hidden.

  • Always make the basket with the intention of the flower girl being able to keep the basket after the wedding.
  • Baskets can be found in craft stores, department stores, wicker stores.
  • If the flower girl is very young, consider making a wrist attachment to help her keep the basket at all times without losing it; a piece of ribbon attached to the basket can be continued to make a wrist band using Velcro.
