How to Cultivate Lemongrass
This is one method of cultivating lemongrass that works well. It's very easy.
Steps
- 1Go to an Asian food market or where you can buy lemongrass that is in whole stalks.
- 2Look for as much of the root bottom as possible, but even ones with even a portion of the heel left on will root.
- 3Put your selections in a glass or jar of water. In a few days they start sprouting roots, but some may take much longer.
- 4Transplant directly into your pot or soil and give it good light, as with all herbs.
- 5Lemongrass is one of the grasses which roots at the node. A node is a place on the stem from which a leaf arises. If you get a section of lemongrass, even at your local grocer (even the big chains) which has even just one node, then it will most likely root quickly in water. Then plant in the garden, and in cold climates (zone 7 or colder), pot indoors for the winter.
Tips
- They look like weeds, so be careful if someone else cares for your yard.
- Be patient. Some took much longer to root but none rotted.
