How to Create Your Own Unique Language

Language is the reason humans have surpassed all other intelligent creatures on this earth. Therefore there is no reason not to dwell into the many webs and constructions hidden in the field of language. If your interests are to create a language, believe it or not, there are steps that will improve your language.

Research a language, any language. My favorite are Russian, Latin, and Greek. Take the time to learn sounds, sentence structure, grammar, and the general feel of the language. This is by far the most important step to creating an intelligible and realistic language. This also means learning the alphabet, which helps in this next step.

Create an alphabet. This is the most fun and creativity dependent phase. You may use the Latin alphabet, but make sure to explore all the phonic rage you want. In English, many sounds may be made, but it own most defiantly not all sounds that exist e.g. Swahili pops and stops, Russian iota-sized vowels, French nasal vowels, ext.

Make grammar decisions. Grammar gives language its most tasteful features and is very important. Look into Latin and Russian, these are languages that use declensions and inflection to assign nouns certain grammatical purpose in a sentence. Look at English and Spanish, these languages use word order to express grammatical purpose. Look at Japanese, a hybrid of these Ideas. Look at your language and chose what you want. There are many choices to be taken seriously.

Make a lexicon. Languages have very distinct sounds, these are not due to the phonic range but instead the syllable restraint. Japanese and Chinese are similar to (C)V(C): were C = consonant and V = vowel. English is more complex, about (C)(C)V(C)(C)(C)+s, and Russian allows four consonants on either side i.e. (C)(C)(C)(C)V(C)(C)(C)(C). Decide what you like best. Now you may create words, I suggest translating a favorite book, or passage, and creating words as you go.

Now you are almost done, the last thing to do is to create an extensive file, describing all that we have just covered. This is beneficial to you and others trying to learn your language.

  • When looking at languages to study, use Wikipedia's IPA for the given language, they are extensive and very helpful. It would be adventitious to memorize these forms.
  • When creating a lexicon, remember, that this should be the easiest part, but still maintain your creativity. I like to use Google translate to translate words so that I may base other words off of them.
  • When looking at syllable restraint note that the simpler the more Africa-like and the more complex the more Germanic-like.

  • Avoid going into this endeavor without knowing any other language. This is a very important step in creating a unique language. Even other fake languages like Klingon, or Na'vi will behoove you more to learn than none at all.
