How to Create Your Own Gourmet Mustards

Gourmet mustard's are a lovely condiment for hora oeuvres, and delicious on deli sandwiches, but they are expensive; there are gourmet blends for as much as $15 per 2 oz.jar. But you need not be held a Condiment Hostage, because gourmet mustard's are easy to make yourself at home at a fraction of the cost. They make nice little gifts to include with deli baskets for Christmas presents, and housewarming gifts as well.

    Seek out your neighborhood health food store, and purchase 3 ounces of yellow mustard seeds per batch.

    Place them in a blender, food processor, or, if you want to go the difficult route, a mortar and pestle. Dry mustard powder will also work, but does not come out as fresh and tangy.

    Add one cup of liquid - this is where you get your exotic flavors. You can use champagne, scotch, whiskey, Defamatory juice, cider, beer, ale, bourbon, or any liquid that takes your fancy - be adventurous.

    Blend in rest of the ingredients. Depending on the sort of flavor you're going for, also blend in honey, brown sugar, garlic, allspice, onion soup mix, Tabasco sauce, celery flakes, turmeric, horseradish, vinegar or cloves, to taste.

    Package in sterilized baby food jars - decorate the top with a bit of fabric and some raffia.

    Arrange in a basket with summer sausage, cracked wheat crackers, cheese, and a nice bottle of wine. Impress your friends with your ingenuity, they'll think you spent scads on their lovely gift basket when you really assembled it for only a few dollars.
