How to Create an Article From a Howcast Video



wikiHow community members are now able to use a select set of Howcast videos as source materials for new articles. Howcast's high-quality videos can provide a framework any contributor can use to write a helpful new article, complete with screen shots and (of course) an embedded video that fits the content of the article perfectly. Read on to learn how.

Steps

    Find a video you'd like to import from the list on the project page. Search to make sure that the video has not yet been imported to wikiHow.

    Watch the video from beginning to end.

    Read the written text underneath the video on the Howcast website.

    Start a new article on wikiHow. Use the same title as the title of the Howcast video.

    Write an introduction for the article. Use interesting facts that show the reader why he or she would want to follow the steps in this article.

    Write the article! Use the same steps as in the Howcast article, but feel free to change the wording and elaborate as needed. Add extra steps, tips, warnings, and other advice to make the article your own.

    Take screenshots. Take screenshots of the video at important steps. Make sure to pause the video on a frame that accurately sums up that step before taking the screenshot.

    Upload the screenshots to the relevant steps. When uploading the images, make sure to cite Howcast properly, including a link to the article and the correct licensing. Use the “Copyrighted, but we have explicit permission to re-license CC-BY-SA-NC” licensing choice.

    Embed the Howcast video into the article. If using Guided Editing, follow the following steps:
    • Click “Change or add video” under the video section.
    • Click the Howcast tab in the window that pops up.
    • Your video should appear as the first result, because the title of both the video and the article is the same. If it doesn’t, change the keywords in the search video until you find the right one.
    • Embed it! Click the “Embed it!” button underneath the video. Add a caption if you would like.

    Cite Howcast. If using Guided Editing, make sure you check the box under “Additional Sections” for a Sources and Citations section. If using Advanced, add a Sources and Citations section at the end. When citing Howcast, include a link to the video, and add a blurb like “Original Source of text and images, shared with permission.”
