How to Crate Train an Older Dog

Do you have an older dog that is not getting in his/her crate? Are you giving him/her all your commands and he/she is still not listening? Well, read these simple steps to crate train your older dog!

Steps

    Buy your dog some treats. Different dogs have different tastes, so choose one that the dog is familiar with and likes. A good suggestion is Milk Bones and Bacon Bits.

    Bring your dog to the crate.

    Give him/her one of the treats, so he/she knows what they taste like.

    Throw the treat in the crate. The dog should hopefully go in to retrieve the treat.

    Say the command that you want for him/her to go in the crate after throwing the treat. Words you could use are: in, crate, or kennel.

    Make your dog stay in there for a short time.

    Repeat the steps of throwing the treat and saying the command.

    Say the command again and see if he/she gets in without having to throw a treat and give him/her the treat at the end if he/she goes in. If the dog doesn't, try doing the treat throwing again.

    Try this for as long as you can until your dog gets it. If it doesn't work after a long time, try again the following day. Some dogs may respond better to different people, so you may consider having someone else try the next day.

    Once you have taught him, on the second day do it again by saying the command. He/she should go inside.

    Try this as much as you can to make him/her not forget it in the following days, weeks, months, etc..

Tips

  • You may want to give him tiny treats so he/she doesn't get fat. Or, you could try healthier alternative snacks.
