How to Core a Lettuce in One Quick Move

By using the following technique, you can core a head of iceberg lettuce without using a knife.

Steps

    Locate the core of the lettuce. The core is the white knob at the base of the lettuce head.

    Hold the head of iceberg lettuce 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 centimeters) above a cutting board. The core should be facing downward toward the cutting board.

    Slam the lettuce firmly against the cutting board. This will detach the core from the rest of the lettuce.

    Pull the core out using your hands. Discard the core into your garbage can or compost pile. You may have to use your fingers to separate it from some of the outer leaves.

Tips

  • To store your lettuce, wash the leaves and dry them with paper towels. Place the lettuce leaves as well as one dry paper towel into a 1-gallon (3.75 liter) resealable plastic freezer bag. Place the lettuce in the coldest part of the refrigerator, which is usually on back of the lowest shelf.
  • When you purchase lettuce at the market, look for bright green heads with no wilted or discolored leaves.
