How to Cook Bean Sprouts

Bean sprouts are common ingredients in many Asian cuisines and are often found used in salads. The most common come from mung beans, which are sprouted commercially under specific light-dark conditions. They are exposed to light for only 4 hours per day, spending the remainder in the dark. They are ready for consumption in about a week. Bean sprouts are a good source of digestive enzymes, which are essential for the dietary breakdown of protein, carbohydrates and fat. Although they are most often served raw, you can cook bean sprouts using a variety of methods.

Lightly sauté the sprouts in a small amount of olive oil as a part of a stir-fry meal. Add other chopped vegetables, thinly sliced meats and sauces and serve the combination over rice. If you use vegetables and meats of significantly different thicknesses, add thinner items last, as they will need less cooking time.

Make an out-of-the-box side dish of boiled bean sprouts. Boil them until they are tender--2-to-3 minutes. Drain them and mix in sesame seeds, garlic powder and chili powder, along with a little salt. Alternately, omit the salt and add a little soy sauce or teriyaki sauce.

sauté the sprouts in peanut oil. Remove them from the oil when they are tender--usually 2-to-3 minutes—and mix them with an oil-and-vinegar salad dressing. Allow them to marinate for 10-to-15 minutes before serving them as a salad option. Mound them on a frise blend to extend them.
