How to Convert a Bitmap Image Into a File Format Supported by wikiHow
Two Methods:Using WindowsUsing a Mac
wikiHow's software accepts most image formats used by digital cameras and graphics programs, including GIF, JPEG and PNG. However, Bitmap (BMP) images will need to be converted. Here is how to do this with either a Windows or Macintosh computer:
Steps
Method 1 Using Windows
- 1Open your file using the Paint application.
- This can be found under Accessories in the Programs menu.
- 2Click on the File menu and select Save as...
- 3Click on the pop-down menu for Save as type.
- 4Select JPEG or PNG. For most images, JPEG is a good choice.
- 5Type in a new name for the file.
- Be sure to save the new version of the image in the directory of your choice.
- 6Click on Save. You are now ready to upload your image to wikiHow.
Method 2 Using a Mac
- 1Open your file using the Preview application.
- This can be found in the Applications folder.
- 2Click on the File menu and select Save as...
- 3Click on the pop-down menu for Format.
- 4Select JPEG or PNG.
- For most images, JPEG is a good choice.
- If you select JPEG, you will then see a slider to select image quality. There is usually no need to change this setting.
- 5Type in a new name for the file.
- Be sure to save the new version of the image in the directory of your choice.
- 6Click on Save. You are now ready to upload your image to wikiHow.
Tips
- If your image uses a transparent background layer, you will need to save it as a PNG. This is not a common format for images used on wikiHow.
- JPEG and PNG files are typically smaller and take less time to upload than GIF files.
- Be sure to look for the new file when uploading the image to wikiHow. This file will usually end in either .jpg or .png.
