Have a game plan. Consider the ages and temperaments of the children that you are in charge of, and prepare a fun game that everyone can participate in.

Be sure to provide tasty and nutritious snacks for the children. I suggest things that are high in protein. Peanut butter, jelly and sandwiches are a good choice, because kids love them, they are easy to make, and peanut butter has a lot of protein. Often, when children misbehave it is likely to be a result of low blood-sugar. Most parents don't even realize this, but everyone gets cranky when they need protein.

If you have access to some form of entertainment, such as a TV, put on an age-appropriate movie for the children to watch. They will sit right down and stare for an hour or so every time.

If they really won't calm down, then just PLAY WITH THEM. Or at least allow them to play with each other. Let them tire themselves out.

If the issue is bad behavior (such as hitting, spitting, etc.) then you will want to take the child causing the problem aside and ask them what is bothering them so much. Usually, if a child is acting out it is because they have a need that is not being met. Find out what it is that they need, and help them get it. They will calm down and mind you, I promise.

Remember that children have a different concept of what is rational, to them it may seem completely appropriate to yell to get what they want. If this happens, tell them in a very calm voice, and without getting upset, that you don't want to be yelled at because it hurts your feelings. Talking about your feelings calmly will in time teach your children to talk about theirs in the same way. Ask them to tell you in a lower voice what it is that they need. Again, help them meet their needs.

Be patient. Remember that YOU ARE AN ADULT. Do not react to bad behavior as a child would, because this will only continue the destructive cycle that you are so unhappy with. Don't stress out, taking care of a group of children is far from easy; just relax and keep a positive attitude. Treat the children with love and respect, and they will learn from you that people interact that way. Don't take the things that they do or say too personally, children are very dramatic sometimes.

  • Teach by example, not through lectures.
  • As always, be safety conscious.
  • Never hit a child.
  • Don't ignore a child, treat them with the same respect you would expect to be treated with.
  • Do not leave children unattended.
