How to Comfort Your Sick Dog

Has your dog fallen ill? Caring for a sick dog takes a lot of work, and you'll likely need to get them to a vet and follow the vet's instructions for how to help them heal. If you want to provide your dog comfort during this process, the following steps can come in handy.

Part 1
General Approaches

    Figure out what's wrong with your dog. Call your veterinarian, or a nearby pet clinic. Schedule an appointment.
    • Try maintaining a relationship with a vet whom you see regularly. Then, if your dog falls ill, your vet is more likely to have information on your dog's needs and health already, and it'll be easier to tell what's wrong.

    Take care of any safety needs. If your pet has an allergy, pick up all items around your house your canine could get into. Remember to fully close your fridge and pantry doors so they can't dig around in there.

    Keep the temperature comfortable. When your pup is sick, chances are they're feeling a bit hot. Try to make sure your thermostat isn't set too warm. Turning on an air conditioner isn't necessary, just try to keep track of their temperature with a thermometer.

    Turn on some relaxing tunes for your pup. Water speakers add a nice sound, as well.

    Sit with them on your couch, and snuggle. It will make them feel safe, and sleepy.

Part 2
Making Their Bed Comfortable

    Remove the cushion from your dog's bed, and slip it through a cotton or satin pillowcase. This will act as sheets, cooling them off.

    Spray your dog's bed and any blankets used with the a fabric spray. Make sure not to spray too much, and that your dog isn't allergic to any of the ingredients.
    • Then lay the blanket on top of the bed, and push down inside the dent where the cushion goes. Replace the cushion into its original place, over top of the blanket.

    Pour the filtered and flavourless detox water into the water bowl. Place it right beside the dog bed, in the corner of the room.

    Before bed-time, plug in a night light. They may want to get a drink of water during the middle of the night, and they need to see.

Tips

  • If you sleep walk, make sure your dogs bed is not in the way of any path to the door. You could trip and fall over them!

  • Dog bed with removable cushion

  • Night light or faux candles
  • Flavourless, filtered detox water
  • Fabric freshening spray or pet odour spray
