How to Comfort Someone Who Has Just Been Car Sick

Steps

    Take some baby wipes or tissues and gently wipe around their mouth, to remove any remainders of what they have just ridden themselves of.

    Offer them a drink of water and a dry biscuit or cracker to soothe the possible pain in their stomach and throat.

    Comfort your friend or relative as much as possible. Talk to them soothingly, cheer them up if they are feeling upset or down and just generally be there for them if they need you.

    If they have soiled their clothes, help them clean up. This may be a very embarrassing situation for your friend or relative, and they may prefer to be left alone at this stage.

    Offer them tissues, mouthwash and a toothbrush and toothpaste if available. If they feel fresh and clean they will most likely be in a far happier mood.

    Give them a paper bag or bucket to keep with them, just in case they throw up again. You could also try giving them a travel sickness tablet, if they still feel sick or you think that they are likely to throw up again.

Tips

  • If they still feel sick after throwing up, tell them to look straight ahead and try not to think about it.
  • If possible, stop the car and take your friend or relative out for some fresh air.
  • If the driver can, try to get them to drive on a slightly straighter less bumpy road such as the motorway, if you are travelling down a bendy lane or track.

Warnings

  • If the colour of the vomit is greenish-yellow or red, or your friend or relative passes out or has severe pains even after throwing up, take him or her to hospital immediately.
