How to Close a Microsoft Account

Have you just decided to stop using a Microsoft Account in lieu of using another email address elsewhere and want to close your account now? This article will explain how you close it. Follow along from step 1 below to find out the process.

    Go to the Microsoft account overview and sign in. (This page looks exactly the same as the standard sign in page)

    Navigate to the page containing the "Close your account" links.Click the "Security and privacy" tab, click "More security settings" underneath the "Account security label.

    Click the "Close account" link underneath the "Close account label at the very bottom of the page. Under "Additional options" at the bottom of the page, click "Close account".

    Run through the process they ask you to ensure you are ready to fully close the account. Verify that all positive account balances that are in the account have been fully used. Click through this screen by clicking "Next".

    Verify that you understand what you won't have access to once your account has been closed. Check all boxes on the screen to ensure they understand that there are several other things about the closure of your account.
    • This includes the following statements you can acknowledge: You might lose any account balances and will lose access to subscription services such as Office365, Xbox, and OneDrive , You will lose access to, Hotmail, and OneDrive., Devices using this account won't work as well without a Microsoft account attached.,Content might not work the way you expect it to., and You'll lose access to data you've stored anywhere you use this account to sign in.

    Click the reason of why you are closing the account from the drop-down reason box. Perhaps you are combining accounts and don't need this second account, or perhaps it's the account was hacked and want to prevent other hacking to this account...whatever your problem is, click the best choice.

    Click the "Mark account for closure" button.


  • Your account ID will be kept "inactive" for about 60 days (2 months) before it becomes fully closed. That means during this time you can activate it again but that doesn't mean you're going to get your deleted data back. After this time your account will be completely deleted and someone else can sign up with your former ID.
  • When you close your Microsoft account you delete your account information like your ID, password and contacts. All of your mails will be deleted and your account is going to be deactivated, any mail coming to your account will be bounced back to the sender (including junk mail senders, telling them that your account is/was valid).
  • Sometimes, the system may ask you to verify with a secondary verification method on file to ensure you are who you say you are. Whether it's through a text message to the cell phone number on file, or an email to the secondary email address on file. A code will be sent that you will need to re-provide to them (that you should receive within a minute or two). Make sure that you can grab this code and supply it to them when they ask you to supply it.
