How to Clear Your History

Every web browser keeps a record of your online activity, including what sites you have visited and when you last visited them. While your history can be a useful tool for finding websites you visited in past, there are also good reasons to clear your history – such as when you want to keep your browsing private. Use the following steps to clear your browsing history in Safari, Chrome, or Firefox, or on your iOS device.

Method 1
Clearing your History in Google Chrome

    Select the “Chrome” menu from the menu bar.

    Choose “Clear Browsing Data” from the drop-down. A pop-up window will appear.

    Select the timeframe for which you’d like to clear your history. By default, Chrome will clear the past hour of browsing data.

    Check the boxes that read “Clear browsing history” and “Clear download history.” Check any other boxes you’d like to clear as well.

    Confirm by clicking “Clear Browsing Data” at the bottom of the pop-up window.

Method 2
Clearing your History in Mozilla Firefox

    Select the “History” menu from the menu bar.

    Choose “Clear Recent History” from the drop-down. A pop-up window will appear.

    Select the timeframe for which you’d like to clear your history. By default, Firefox will clear your entire history.

    Check the boxes that read “Browsing and Download History,” and “Form and Search History.” Check any other boxes you’d like to clear as well.

    Confirm by clicking “Clear Now” at the bottom of the pop-up.

Clearing your History in Safari

Method 4
Clearing your History in Safari for iOS

    Open your Settings. Tap the “Settings” icon on your home screen.

    Choose “Safari” from the list of options on the left-hand column.

    Confirm by tapping “Clear” in the confirmation pop-up window.

Tips

  • Some browsers, such as Chrome and Safari, allow you to browse the web in private, without leaving a history trail. Enable these modes to prevent having to clear your history later.
  • Select a shorter timeframe for which to clear your history if you are only concerned with recent activities.
  • If you’re concerned about privacy, you can clear other personal data too, such as cookies and stored form data.

Warnings

  • Clearing your history cannot be undone. Once cleared, the data is gone.
  • Clearing your history will delete your browsing data, but other users may notice the “gap” in your browsing history. Keep this in mind when clearing your data.
