The best way to get started on cleaning out your closet: Get everything out. Completely empty your wardrobe onto your bed so you can see what you're dealing with. You'll be able to see how much stuff you have and get a good idea of how much you want to get rid of.

At this point, organisation is key. Divide your clothes and accessories into three piles - Sell, Donate and Trash. Have a box ready for the sell and donate piles and a strong bin bag for the trash. Another great space maker is storage. Put all of your out of season clothes into storage to make more room for in-season items.

Follow the one year rule. If you haven't worn an item of clothing in the past year, either sell or donate it. What are the odds of you ever wearing that garment again, if it hasn't appealed to you for a year?

Items that help you organize your closer are a must. Canvas shoe holders, draw dividers and extra hooks for belts and scarves are essential to help keep your closet clean. Invest in some good organizational products that will make picking out an outfit every morning so much easier.

Using slim coat hangers can help free up room when putting everything back in. Organize your clothes in a way that makes sense to you. If color-coding is your thing, go for it. If you'd rather have formal clothes on one side and casual clothes on the other, that's good too. Make your newly replenished wardrobe work for you. Organizing by season is also a good way to go!

Sell any good quality clothes in a garage sale, at a car boot sale, or over the internet. There are many websites you can use, such as eBay and Facebook. There are also many sites for high-end designer clothing resale. Twice and Threadflip are good sites to try.

  • Only give away good quality clothing, whether you're selling or donating the item. Do not give away torn, stained, greasy or discolored items.
  • Spray your closet with an air freshener often. This scent could be a nice laundry smell, or a citrus smell that feels sweet and clean.
  • Wash your clothes once a week, at the very least. You wouldn't want your clothes hamper to overload.
  • Clean your closet lightly once a month so there's less to do later if you don't like having to commit to a huge purge.
  • Listen to some music. It will help you get motivated.

  • Don't be lazy. Just throwing some jeans in your closet because you don't feel like putting them away nicely could lead to a huge mess in the future.
