How to Clean Musty Smells from a Suitcase

Suitcases tend to get stored for most of their life, being used only for travel or short-term visits. Depending on where they're stored, they can start to smell musty, and this odour can transfer to your clothes. Here is what to do to rid the suitcase of a musty odour.

    Open the suitcase in a position where you can leave it overnight.

    Open a container of brand new clay cat litter. Place the open container into the suitcase.

    Close the suitcase and leave overnight. Check the suitcase in the morning. The odour should have shifted. If not, leave for a bit longer.


  • If there are other odours in the suitcase, this method might not remove all of them; try to identify any mildew, mould, urine, or other possible odour sources in this case.
  • This can also be used with a trunk.
  • Baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) can also be used in place of the clay cat litter.
