How to Clean Moldy Horse Tack

You opened your tack trunk to the familiar dreaded stale smell of molded leather. Your prized halter or bridle lays ruined in blue and white mess. What do you do?

Steps

    Immediately disassemble the tack completely.

    Collect all the needed tools. Soft brush, stiff brush, soft clean dry rags, Leather oil, saddle soap, and waterproof canvas or wrap of some sort, and 2 buckets of water.

    Use a stiff brush. On the metal use your stiff brush but use the soft one on the leather. Work the soap into the brushes til you get a good lather then brush the mold off.

    Dunk the bridle. Go ahead and feel free to dunk the whole bridle in the water at this point. It can't do anymore damage than what is already done.

    Dry off the bridle. Use some of the rags to completely dry off the bridle.

    Slather on the leather oil. Once dry and clean slather the leather oil all over the tack and wrap up in the waterproof canvas or other material and store that way.

    Follow those simple instructions and you will never have to deal with moldy tack again.

Tips

  • Clean the tack and make sure it is completely dry and in an airtight container, if you do not want to store it in oiled rags.
  • Store them right the first time and you will not have to deal with mold ever again.
