How to Choose the Right Size of Chandelier

Chandeliers are a beautiful piece of art that usually give the room a visual focal point. They make up an important of any room, and for this reason, careful thought should go into the selection of the right fixture. If the chandelier is too large, it will overpower the space, while one that is too small will look out of space. In order to select the right size, you need to go through the following steps.

Figure out the height of the ceiling in your room. The reason for this is that higher ceilings usually require larger fixtures while lower ceilings require smaller fixtures. A common favorite is to 2.5 to 3 inches (6.4 to 7.6 cm) for every foot of height for a room. So if the ceiling is 8 feet (2.4 m) high, the fixture should have a height of between 20 and 24 inches.

Add up the width and length you calculated, in this case 14 + 10 = 24. The perfect diameter of the chandelier for a room like this would be approximately 24 inches (61.0 cm).
    • These are all approximate dimensions. Take into consideration the "visual weight" of the chandelier as different styles can make a chandelier appear larger or smaller than they actually are.

  • It is recommended that you choose a lighting fixture that might appear slightly larger than you think is appropriate. A chandelier that is too small for the space will simply look awkward and out of place, while a slightly larger fixture still looks good.
  • If the chandelier is for a dining room, then you should take into consideration the size of the dining room table. In this case, the fixture should be approximately half the width of the table.
  • In some cases, the ceilings might be relatively low, while the room is too large. Consider in those cases possibly installing 2 chandeliers in the room.
