How to Change Your Apple ID Password

Your Apple ID password is very important, as it safeguards a lot of your personal data. It's a good idea to change your password on a regular basis. There are several ways you can change your Apple ID password, using either a computer or your iPhone, iPad, or iPod. If you can't remember your password, you can reset it.

Method 1
Using the Apple ID Website

    Visit the Apple ID website. You can change your Apple ID on any device with an internet connection by visiting the Apple ID website (appleid.apple.com).

    Click "Manage your Apple ID" and sign in. You will need to enter your Apple ID email address and password.
    • If you don't know your current password, click here.

    Click the "Password and Security" option. You can find this in the left menu.

    Verify your identity. You'll need to either answer two security questions or enter the code that Apple texts to your mobile device.
    • If you don't remember your security questions, you'll need to contact Apple Support for a temporary PIN that will allow you to access your account.

    Click "Change Password." This will open the Change Password page.

    Enter your current password and create a new one. On the Change Password page, you'll need to enter your current password, as well as create your new password. You'll need to type it twice to verify it.[1]

Method 2
Using Your iPhone, iPad, or iPod

    Open the Settings app and tap "iCloud." You'll see your Apple ID at the top of the screen.

    Tap your Apple ID. You will be prompted to enter your password to continue.
    • If you don't know your current password, click here.

    Tap "Password & Security." This will display your password options.

    Tap "Change Password." This will open the Change Password screen.

    Answer your security questions. These questions are designed to help protect your account. You'll need to answer two questions to change your password. If you have two-step authentication enabled, you'll need to enter the code that Apple texts you instead.
    • If you can't remember your security questions, you can reset them if you have a rescue email address associated with your account. You can set a rescue email address from the "Password & Security" screen.

    Enter your current password and create a new one. On the Change Password screen, you'll need to enter your current password, as well as create your new password. You'll need to type it twice to verify it.

Method 3
Recovering a Lost Password

    Visit iforgot.apple.com. If you can't remember your password and need to reset it, you can use the iForgot tool at iforgot.apple.com. You can access this website from any device with an internet connection.

    Enter your Apple ID. Enter the email address you use for your Apple ID into the field in the iForgot page and click "Next."

    Decide how you want to verify your identity. Depending on your account settings, there may be several options for verifying your identity. If you aren't able to complete any of these options, you'll need to contact Apple Support so that they can verify your identity and allow you to reset your password:
    • You can have an email sent to the email address associated with your account.
    • You can answer security questions that your created when you made your account.
    • If you have two-step authentication turned on, you can enter the code that is sent to your mobile device.

    Enter your birth date. You'll need to enter your birthday after picking your authentication method. This is to help verify your identity.

    Verify your identity. After entering your birthday, you'll need to perform whichever identity verification method you chose.
    • If you decided to have an email sent, you'll need to click the "Reset Now" link in the email that you receive from Apple.
    • If you decided to answer security questions, you'll need to answer two that you created when you made your account.
    • If you opted to receive a code, enter your Recovery Key and then enter the code that is texted to your mobile phone.

    Change your password. After verifying your identity, you'll be able to change your Apple ID password. You'll need to enter it twice in order to verify it. The change will take place immediately, and you'll need to enter your new password on all of your connected Apple devices.[2]
