How to Change a Sentence from Active Voice to Passive Voice

Two Parts:Identifying the type of SentenceConverting the sentence

We can express a sentence in many ways but the meaning that it gives needs to be same, for example:" Rama killed Ravana ". The other way to express the same sentence is "Ravana was killed by Rama". These two sentences give the same meaning but the placement of the object and the subject differ in those sentences.

Part 1
Identifying the type of Sentence

    Identify the different types of Present Tenses. We have Simple Present tense, Present Continuous, Present Perfect and Present Perfect Continuous.
    • There is a subject + Verb1 for Simple Present Tense. For example: He writes.

    • The pattern of a Present Continuous Tense is Subject + be verb(am, is , are)+v1(verb1) + ing. For Example: He is writing.

    • For Present perfect, subject + have/has +v3(verb 3) should be there in a sentence. For Example: He has written.

    • Present perfect continuous tense: subject + has/have+ been + v1(verb 1) + ing. Example: He has been writing.

    Identify different Past tenses. There is subject + Verb 2 in the sentence for Simple Past Tense. For Example: He wrote.
    • Past continuous: subject + be verb (was , were)+v1(verb1) +ing. Example: He was writing.

    • Past perfect: subject + had + v3(verb 3). Example: He had written.

    • There would be subject + had + been + v1(verb 1) + ing in a Past perfect continuous tense. For Example: He had been writing.

    See subject + will/ shall + v1(verb 1) in future tenses. For Example, He will write a book.

Part 2
Converting the sentence

    Change from Active to Passive.

    Use this formula for a future tense. Will+ be + v3. For Example, Active voice : He will write a letter. Passive voice : A letter will be written by him.
    • In this formula 'be' does not mean be form of verbs like am, is , are, was or were.

    Put Be(am, is , are, was , were)+v3 for a Simple Present or a Simple Past sentence.
    • Active voice : 1- The cat kills the mice.
    • 2- Someone stole my watch.
    • Passive voice: 1-The mice are killed by the cat.
    • 2- My watch was stolen by someone.

    Remember that we need to use “is” and “are” for present tense and other for past tense.

    Put be(am, is , are, was , were) + being + v3 if the sentence is Present Continuous or Past Continuous.
    • Active voice: 1- The mason is building the wall.
    • 2- Some boys were helping the wounded men.
    • Passive voice: 1- The wall is being built by the mason.
    • 2- Wounded men were being helped by some boys.

    Use “Been + v3” for Present of Past Perfect.
    • Active voice : 1- Someone has stolen my purse.
    • 2- She had finished the work.
    • Passive voice : 1- My purse has been stolen by someone.
    • 2- The work had been finished by her.
