How to Celebrate Sadie Hawkins Day

"When ah fires [my gun], all o' yo' kin start a-runnin! When ah fires agin — after givin' yo' a fair start — Sadie starts a runnin'. Th' one she ketches'll be her husbin."

These are the words spoken by the fictional Sadie Hawkins' father in a comic strip called Li'l Abner. In the comic, Sadie was unmarried (yet quick-footed) at 35 and still living in her father's house. Her father was clearly panicked at this point, so he gathered all the unmarried men in town. They were to have a footrace, and Sadie got to catch whichever guy they wanted to marry. This was a big deal, once the comic became popular, since it was the 50s, and women and men had clearly separated roles in society. The comic created an epidemic of Sadie Hawkins dances and many other things in honor of it.

Go to a Sadie Hawkins dance at your school! If there's no dance at your school, or if you aren't even in school at the moment, have your own hillbilly party! Li'l Abner was a comic that featured a clan of hillbillies living in the mountains of Alabama, so do your best to emulate them (unless you think it's mean and would prefer to dress normally).

Make Mammy Yokum's Cream of Wheat Apple Pudding. This recipe comes from yet another book published by the comic strip author with more recipes from the comic strip.

Start a footrace (for fun, not for marrying)! College students are the ones who truly started Sadie Hawkins day (201 colleges had footraces, which influenced many clubs, churches, and army camps to do the same). Maybe you could even get your church, school, or just a group of people to enter the footrace.

Read some Li'l Abner comics. It won't improve your spelling or grammar, and you might even find it offensive. However, it can be interesting reading old comics!

Plan a girl's night. Invite all of your friends over and have a sleepover, watch old movies, whatever you like.

Spend a day with your favorite guy friend, boyfriend, father, grandfather, etc.

  • It is often argued when Sadie Hawkins day is. Some say it's February 29 (also known as Leap Day), while others say it's November 15 (the date of the comic's debut), and even specify this further and say it's the first Saturday of each November (according to the Old Farmer's Almanac).
  • Even though Sadie might have been the "homeliest gal in all them hills" doesn't mean that everyone attending a Sadie Hawkins dance is as well.

  • Please understand that this day does not entitle you, nor anyone else, to marry whoever they please.
