How to Categorize a File in Wikimedia Commons

If you are contributing to Wikimedia Commons, then you probably have heard about categorizing your files. It isn't too hard, but you need to have some familiarity with how they do it or where to look to make it a little easier.

Steps

    Categorize when you upload. This is the easiest place to do it at. If you use the upload tool, it is on the page where you add the descriptions and name the file.

    Add the category (or categories) later.
    • Go to the actual page where the file is.
    • Click on Edit.
    • Type in the appropriate category. Do this in the following format:[[Category:Richard Boly]]

    Enter Categorizing (or something similar) in the Summary bar. This lets patrollers know what you were doing.

    Save the updates to the file.
