How to Catch a Self Alley Oop

If you've been to a basketball court and seem a lot of people trying to dunk, you usually may see someone try to throw a self alley-oop and dunk it. Sometimes people are successful and sometimes people are not. Hopefully with these tips, you will be throwing down your own alley oops in no time.

Steps

    Start somewhere not too close but not too far from the basket, such as right on the 3 pt line.

    Throw the ball straight up and towards the basket simultaneously so that the ball comes down a couple of feet behind the rim.

    Once the ball hits the ground, wait for it to bounce back in the air to run to the basket.

    Once the ball is making its second trip to the ground, jump up and catch the ball right in front of the basket.

    From this point, just try putting it in the basket.

Tips

  • Instead of trying to slam the ball down, just try to put it in the basket first. You usually see people "spaz" on a dunk because they're trying to hard to grab the rim.
  • Warming up your legs may give you an extra inch (running a couple of laps, etc.)
  • Try palming and getting a good grip of the ball before your alley oop attempt

Warnings

  • Be cautious on how you come back to the ground, you do not want to get injured.
  • If you do succeed, watch out for the ball coming back to the ground.

Things You'll Need

  • A nice vertical leap (preferably getting at least the palm of your hand over the rim)
  • Being able to catch the ball in the air
