How to Carve a Skull in a Pumpkin

Is every 'normal' pumpkin sold out, but you don't want a tiny one or one that looks like it has pimples? You can easily make a good looking skull/jack o' lantern out of a pumpkin, no matter what it looks like.

Printable Pumpkin Carving Template

To use this template, print it out and tape it to your pumpkin wherever it fits best. Try to pick a surface that is relatively free of blemishes, if possible. Then, use a sharp, narrow implement like a toothpick to poke holes through the paper and create a guide that will help you carve your pumpkin.

Carving a Skull in a Pumpkin

    Clean out the pumpkin. Before you make it, cut the top open and take out the seeds.

    Inspiration and references. Take an anatomical drawing book made for artists and flip to a page with a skull on it.

    Drawing the face. Remember to use a washable marker!
    • The Eyes. The eyes are slightly bent down and are slightly rounded rectangles. Draw that on the pumpkin.

    • The Nose. The nose is a rounded triangle and the bottom is two half circles. Draw that in between and slightly below the eye sockets.

    • The Jaw. Draw the jaw on the pumpkin. Start by drawing two quarter circles with the round parts facing each other, then two more smaller quarter circles under them with the round part facing outwards.

    • The Teeth. Add the teeth in rows on the pumpkin so they meet at the ends of the quarter circles.

    Carve. Carve out the eyes and nose with a knife, then carve out the shape made by the quarter circles, then carve a line in between the teeth and carve lines where the gaps in between the teeth would be.

    Done! Wipe the marker off the pumpkin and then place it on the front porch, or wherever you wish to proudly display your masterpiece.
