Gas can be such a distressing experience for both you and your baby. The gas can make your baby feel uncomfortable and the suffering of your infant is upsetting for you as a parent. If you have made sure that your baby is fussing because of gas (not because they are hungry, tired, or need a clean diaper), there are several things you can do to help relieve the pain from abdominal gas in your fussy baby.

Method 1
Soothing Your Gassy Baby by Burping

    Burp your baby often. Burping your baby means that you should hold your baby and pat them gently and repeatedly on the back to help the air escape through your baby’s mouth. This could lead to an accidental spit up, though, so you may want to place a towel under your baby’s chin to help prevent making a mess.[1]
    • You should burp your baby every 2-3 ounces or when you switch breasts. If your baby gets very gassy, you may have to burp more often.

    Burp your baby against your chest. Hold your baby against your chest while you are in an upright sitting position. This position will make your baby’s chin rest on your shoulder and you can support your baby’s body with one hand while you pat their back with the other.[2]

    Burp your baby in your lap. Hold your baby in a sitting position in your lap. You should place one hand across your baby’s chest to help support their body and hold your baby’s chin with the fingers of that hand. Use your other hand to gently pat your baby’s back. [3]

    Burp your baby on their belly. Lay your baby on his belly face down across your lap. Make sure to support your baby’s head with one hand and hold his head higher than his chest while patting his back with the other hand.[4]

Method 2
Soothing a Gassy Baby With Physical Activity or Touch

    Bicycle your baby’s legs. Lay your baby on their back and pump their legs back and forth as if your baby was riding an invisible bicycle. Repeat this motion for several minutes to give the gas some time to work its way out of your baby’s belly.[5]
    • You can also try to give your baby tummy time to help alleviate discomfort from gas.

    Massage your baby’s belly. Lay your baby on their back on your lap and gently massage your baby’s belly with one hand. Make sure you support your baby’s head with the other hand. Make small, gentle circles with your fingers, but be careful not to press too hard.[6]
    • Try to massage in a clock-wise direction when looking at your baby. This helps move the gas along the colon and out the bottom.

    Massage your baby’s back. For this treatment, you should lay your baby down on their tummy across your lap and begin massaging the infant’s back. This can help relieve excess pressure from gas by breaking up the gas bubbles and helping the gas find their way out of your baby’s belly.

Method 3
Using Other Methods to Soothe a Gassy Baby

    Give your baby a warm bath. The warm water will often soothe your baby and help alleviate some of the discomfort. A nice warm bath may even help to break up some of the gas bubbles and release the gas, especially if you combine it with some belly massages for your baby.[7]
    • If you like, you can take a bath with your baby so that it is easier to monitor their behavior and to massage their belly.
    • Note: Never leave a baby alone during bath time.

    Get gas drops. If you’ve tried all of the other methods and nothing seems to work for your gassy baby, it might be time to try some simethicone gas drops. You can purchase these over-the-counter and they are considered safe enough to give to your infant several times a day as needed.[8]
    • A popular brand of gas drops for infants is Mylicon.[9]

    Hold your baby in a face-down position. Holding your baby securely over one of your arms while he or she is facing downward can help alleviate gas pains. This position is often called the “gas hold” or the “colic hold” and has been proven to help soothe a baby suffering from uncomfortable gas.[10]

Method 4
Preventing Gas in Your Baby

    Feed your baby before he cries. When your baby cries from hunger, that is their way of telling you that they can’t wait any longer to eat. If you let your baby get to this point, they will eat more rapidly once you begin feeding them and this will lead to an increase in air intake.[11]
    • A crying or hungry baby will gulp more air in as they feed, causing more gas in your baby.

    Check the bottle. If a baby ingests too much or too little milk or formula at a time, this can also cause them to swallow more air than they should during feeding. You should check the bottle’s nipple to make sure that the opening isn’t too large or too small.[12]
    • Additionally, you’ll want to get the angle right for feeding (whether bottle-feeding or breastfeeding). With a bottle, you’ll want to tilt the bottle so that the entire nipple fills with milk. Always make sure that your baby’s head is higher than their stomach.
    • You can also try different types of bottles to see if one works better. The bottles that are angled, collapsible, or have a bag inside often reduce extra air and gas.

    Adjust your diet if you are breastfeeding. Some foods are notorious for causing gas. If you’re eating these food items while you’re breastfeeding, then your baby is ingesting them too. Try to cut back on foods that are hard to digest and are known to cause gas, or at least try to space them out during the day.[13] Some foods to limit if you’re having trouble with gas include:[14]
    • Broccoli
    • Cauliflower
    • Cabbage
    • Brussel sprouts
    • Onions
    • Beans

Recognizing the Signs of a Gassy Baby

    Notice if your baby burps. If your baby is burping on their own, this means that there is air trapped inside of their body and you may need to take action to help relieve any potential discomfort. Try burping your baby or massing their belly.
    • Farting is also a tell-tale sign of gassiness in babies.

    See if your baby is fussy. Babies usually cry for a reason – it is one of the ways they communicate with you. A crying baby needs attention to figure out what they need and trapped air/gas might be the reason your baby is acting fussy, especially if your baby doesn’t usually act fussy very often.
    • If your baby is crying and you can determine the reason – you have fed them, changed them, and given them a nap – then your baby might have gas.

    Check whether your baby is bloated. If your baby seems bloated, with a slightly distended belly, this is probably due to excess gas in their abdomen. You don’t need to worry about this unless your baby is acting like he is uncomfortable.[15]
    • A gassy baby might also have a hard tummy. However, if the bloating or hardness get worse or don't go away, talk to your doctor.


  • A breastfeeding mother should consider chewing some carom seeds. It will relieve the colic in babies and aid in digestion.
  • Your doctor may rarely recommend changing formulas if your baby continues to be very gassy.
    • Avoid using powdered formula if you can, as that can lead to more gas.


  • Talk to your doctor if your baby continues to be gassy despite trying these measures, especially if they aren't eating as well, are very fussy, or are vomiting.
