How to Buy Reborn Babies

Two Methods:Venues and LocationsFeatures of Reborn Babies

Reborn babies are dolls that have been manufactured and painted to resemble lifelike human babies. Reborn babies are created by hobbyists all over the world; however, the association of International Reborn Doll Artists (IRDA) trains and educates hobbyists specifically on the methods for creating reborn dolls. Any reborn baby that you purchase from an artist that belongs to the IRDA may be the most artfully crafted; however, you can also buy reborn babies from other artists at craft fairs and conventions or from websites that belong to reborn baby artists. Continue reading to learn about the methods and practices for buying reborn babies.

Method 1
Venues and Locations

  1. 1
Visit craft conventions or craft fairs in your local area. A hobbyist who specializes in creating reborn babies may have a booth set up featuring the dolls.
    • Read newspapers or local classified ads to determine the dates of upcoming craft events in your local area.
    • Perform an Internet search to find information about craft fairs or conventions that will be occurring in your area, using keywords such as "craft fair" or "craft convention" with the name of your town or city.
  2. 2
Visit the websites of IRDA members. IRDA members usually sell reborn babies in their online stores, also known as "nurseries."
    • Go to the IRDA website featured in the Sources section of this article to access links to various online stores that sell reborn babies.
    • Click on each online store logo or website link to browse the reborn babies for sale by each artist.
  3. 3
Perform an Internet search for sellers of reborn babies. Some reborn baby artists may not belong to any particular organization and may sell their reborn babies on auctions websites such as eBay.
    • Go to an Internet search engine and type in keywords to locate reborn baby artists. Examples of keywords you can use are "reborn baby retailers," "buy reborn babies," or "reborn babies for sale."
    • Visit the eBay website provided to you in the Sources section of this article to view current auctions and sale listings for reborn babies.

Method 2
Features of Reborn Babies

  1. 1
Determine the type of paint used to paint the reborn baby. Some paints will adhere to the doll's skin permanently; whereas other paints may rub off the doll's skin or fade as time passes.
    • Look for reborn babies painted with heat set oil paints manufactured by Genesis. This brand of paint is most commonly used by the majority of reborn baby artists; however, other brands of oil paints that have been applied in thin layers can also adhere permanently to the doll's skin without rubbing off.
  2. 2
Determine if the reborn baby's skin is excessively shiny or looks wet. These signs indicate that the paint will rub away from the skin eventually, as the artist most likely scrubbed the doll's skin with acetone before it was painted.
    • Look for dolls that have skin with a matte appearance, which indicates that the paint and method used will not fade or rub away from the skin.
  3. 3
Determine if the body of the reborn baby has joints. This will allow you to position the doll in numerous poses.
    • Look for jointed reborn babies made from sturdy and heavy material such as flannel, thick cotton, or suede; all of which will allow you to easily move and position the joints.
  4. 4
Determine the type of filling used inside the reborn baby. Some filling materials may cause the vinyl of the doll's body to deteriorate or become stained over time, such as colored sand.
    • Verify that the doll is filled with either glass beads, polyester filling, metal pellets, or hard polyester pellets.
  5. 5
Determine if the reborn baby has quality hair. Some material that resembles hair may not look or feel authentic; whereas other hair types may easily fall out.
    • Observe the reborn baby's hair from all angles to make sure that there is hair on the back of the head in addition to the front.
    • Look for reborn babies with soft, angora goat hair that can lay flat on the doll's head. The hair should sealed from the inside of the head with a waterproof adhesive, which will prevent the hair from falling out.
  6. 6
Examine the details of a reborn baby's features.
    • Look to see that eyes, lips, and nostrils are aligned properly, and that the eye sockets do not contain any gaps that allow the eyeballs to roll around.
    • Inspect the fingernails and toenails of the reborn baby to see if they have been manicured, trimmed, glossed, and appear realistic.

  • Ask the artist for additional photos of the reborn baby if you are purchasing the doll online and cannot see certain features clearly. This will help verify that the artist isn't covering up any imperfections with clothing.
  • In most cases, you can request that a reborn baby artist create a doll using your specific preferences. For example, if you want a doll that resembles your child who is now an adult, you can provide baby pictures of your child to the artist, who can then replicate a reborn baby doll based on your child's features.
  • You can also buy reborn baby kits that contain doll body parts and the materials needed to make your own reborn baby. These kits can usually be purchased from reborn doll artists or from online retailers.
  • Some artists may charge anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars or euros for reborn babies. You may want to browse prices from several different artists before you decide to buy a particular reborn baby.
