How to Buy Childrens Furniture

Furniture makes a bedroom or playroom a special area where children can sleep, play or study. Purchase children's furniture online, at furniture stores, consignment stores, thrift stores, yard sales estate sales.

    Take older children with you when shopping for furniture. Be firm and say no if a child wants you to buy a piece of furniture that looks fun but may not be safe or practical.

    Make sure bassinets and cradles have legs that lock, a sturdy bottom with a wide, stable base, and a mattress that fits snugly to the sides, top and bottom.

    Buy a changing table that won't tip over. Changing tables should have durable, well-designed straps with built-in drawers so you don't have to leave the baby alone.

    Choose a crib with slats no farther apart than 2 3/8 inches (6.0325 cm). Make sure the mattress fits snugly and has mattress supports that attach securely to the footboard and headboard. Be sure latches that allow you to drop the sides latch securely so the infant can't drop the sides.

    Buy a sturdy highchair with a wide base so the chair won't tip, and straps that fasten to the seat and not the tray. Folding highchairs should have locking devices that lock securely so the chair won't fold while a child is sitting in it.

    Select a playpen with a small mesh weave no more than 1/4 inch (6.35 mm). Be sure the mesh attaches securely to the floor plate and top rail. For wooden playpens, the slats should be no more than 2 3/8 inch (6.0325 cm) apart. Test locking devices at the store to make sure they lock securely.

  • Bunk beds are a great way to make use of limited space rooms. Not only do they allow you to save space for your children’s bedroom, the novelty of the ladder makes bedtime more fun for the children.
