Contact area brick and stone sellers to determine what type of products that they sell as well as their pricing. You can find such sellers by checking the phone book yellow pages, by asking for referrals or by searching online.
    • Know the difference in brick types. Building bricks are used for structure and construction. They have holes in them to help reduce their weight. Face bricks are the ones that show to the outside of a project. They do not have holes in them because they are what is visible on a project. Firebricks resist heat and are made for fireplaces or other construction projects that are heat sensitive. Pavers are used on sidewalks or other outside projects. Antique bricks, also referred to as tumbled bricks, are used to give an aged look to a project. Novabriks interlock and don't require mortar.
    • Some stone options can include gravel, flagstone and fieldstone among others.
    • Choose a dealer that has displays of the finished product. You want to take into account the finished appearance of what you are purchasing before you invest the time and money into the product.
    • Consider the natural variations in the brick or stones that you are considering. Review both color and texture before making a purchase.
    • Speak to the dealers about how they price their materials. Determine if pricing is by unit, by ton or by other measure.
    • Discuss with the dealer how much their business recommends based on the square footage and the scope of the project.
